The expansion and contraction of ice at the poles reflects the pulse of our planet as we orbit the sun.

This effect can be seen clearly from space, where we can also detect how weather patterns influence the movement of massive ice floes and the extent of melting that now occurs during the summer months.

This visualisation shows the polar ice concentration of the northern and southern hemispheres throughout 2016. I designed, developed and produced the visualisation, with assistance from subject matter experts.

It was used extensively by broadcast media, including the BBC, CNN and Sky News.

The visualisation was created for EUMETSAT, for their outreach activities in relation to the European Commission’s Copernicus earth observation initiative.
